NNMTA Silver State CompetitionPurpose: This event is a competition that serves as a fundraiser for the Nevada Music Teachers Association. The proceeds are used for educational workshops and clinicians to benefit teachers, students and parents. It is open to all instruments, and ribbon awards for first, second and third place are given in each category. Eligibility: The Silver State Competition is open to any instrumental or voice student of any age with the exception of college music majors and minors. Students who have won 1st place the previous year may enter as honorary non-competitive performers and present the awards in the same category the following year. These winners may enter a different category as a competitor. Different age levels do not constitute a different category. When: The competition is held each year in October or November at Church Fine Arts building at University of Nevada, Reno. For exact dates and application deadline, refer to the NNMTA Calendar. Dates are established during the summer. Students who register for the event will find out their assigned times by direct mailing from the competition coordinator, usually 1-2 weeks prior to the event.. Judging: Judges will select first, second and third place in each category and age group, and judges will not give any written or verbal feedback to participants. Judges can pick winners based on a variety of subjective factors; it is not necessarily the most advanced repertoire or "most polished" musician who will win each round. Judges are not permitted to award ties. There may be one or more judges in each session. Format: Students play in sessions that resemble recitals, and sometimes multiple categories are scheduled within the same session. Last year's 1st place winner of any category may complete an application to present an honorary performance in the session and to present awards. Winners are announced and ribbons are handed out immediately after the last participant performs.
Students may enter in more than one category, paying appropriate fees with each entry application. Ensemble fees are the same regardless of how large the ensemble is. Entry fee is optional for "honorary performances". Categories may be combined depending on the number of participants. Classical Solo requires literature from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods. Social Solo music includes arrangements and simplifications of classical music, light contemporary, movie and stage music, jazz, hymns, pedagogical method books or music used to accompany groups. Students may enter their own compositions and arrangements in the social category. Ensemble category includes all classical and social repertoire. The Adult category includes all classical, social and ensemble music..
