NNMTA Silver State MusikFestPurpose: This event is a competition that serves as a fund raiser for the Nevada Music Teachers Association. The proceeds are used for educational workshops and clinicians to benefit teachers, students and parents. It is open to all instruments, and ribbon awards for first, second and third place are given in each category. Eligibility: The MusikFest is open to any instrumental or voice student age 19 and under (birth date prior to the date of the MusikFest). The following students are not eligible to compete in the CLASSICAL SOLO MusikFest category (but are allowed to compete in the SOCIAL SOLO and ENSEMBLE categories):
A student must have studied with the participating teacher for at least 3 months prior to the event. When: The competition is held each year in October at University of Nevada, Reno (Church Fine Arts building). For exact dates and application deadline, refer to the NNMTA Calendar (keep in mind that dates are not usually set until June or sometimes even September). Students who register for the event will find out their assigned times by direct mailing from the competition coordinator, usually no less than 1-2 weeks prior to the event. Judging: Judges will select first, second and third place in each session, and judges will not give any written or verbal feedback to participants. Judges can pick winners based on a variety of subjective factors; it is not necessarily the most advanced repertoire or “most polished” musician who will win each round. Judges are not permitted to award ties. Format: Students play in sessions that resemble recitals, and sometimes multiple categories are scheduled within the same session. Winners are announced and ribbons are handed out immediately after the last participant performs. Categories:
Students may enter in more than one category, paying appropriate fees with each entry. Ensemble fees are the same regardless of how large the ensemble is. The ensemble sessions (elementary, middle school and high school) may be split up or combined depending on the number of participants. Arrangements and simplified versions of pieces are considered “social”. Classical solo requires literature from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods. Social solo music includes arrangements and simplifications of classical music, light contemporary, movie and stage music, jazz, hymns, pedagogical method books or music used to accompany groups. Students may enter their own compositions and arrangements in the social category. Time Limits: Students will be held to the following time limits:
